Legal Aspects of the Myth of Procne and Philomela. Fides and Foedus

Abstract

The study concentrates on the myth about Procne and Philomela, presented by Ovid in book VI of the Metamorphoses. Since the text is quite rich in legal terminology, an attempt to apply to it the method of legal analysis is made, the focus of which being one of the legal aspects which can be observed – the problem about fides and foedus. The paper studies the problem of the peace treaty between Athens and the Thracians, as well as the problem about the exchange of binding promises between Thereus and Pandion. The study observes a parallel between the means by which the two contracts are guaranteed and analyzes the way in which their breaking is sanctioned.
